Frequently Asked Questions About Fertility Acupuncture
-
Acupuncture can be used alongside your overall fertility care to support menstrual cycle health, stress regulation, and symptoms that may accompany hormonal or reproductive health concerns. Treatment is individualized based on your cycle, fertility history, symptoms, and whether you are trying to conceive naturally or using fertility treatments such as IUI or IVF.
-
Yes! Many patients seek fertility acupuncture while trying to conceive even without assisted reproductive treatment. Treatment may focus on menstrual cycle health, ovulation, the luteal phase, stress, sleep, and other symptoms or health concerns that may be relevant to your fertility.
-
Yes! Acupuncture can be used alongside fertility treatments such as IUI and IVF, and there is a growing body of research examining acupuncture as a complementary treatment during assisted reproduction.
Research has found that acupuncture may improve clinical pregnancy rates when incorporated into IVF care, although results vary depending on the timing, frequency, and acupuncture protocol used. Some studies suggest that receiving acupuncture throughout the IVF process, rather than only immediately before and after embryo transfer, may be particularly beneficial.
Acupuncture can be incorporated during the months leading up to treatment, ovarian stimulation, around IUI or egg retrieval, and before and after embryo transfer. Your treatment schedule is individualized around your fertility history, medications, and fertility clinic's protocol.
At Raku Acupuncture, acupuncture is used with the goal of supporting you throughout the fertility treatment process.
-
Yes! Male fertility is an important part of the fertility picture, and acupuncture can be used to support sperm count, motility, morphology, and overall sperm quality. Research suggests that acupuncture may have beneficial effects on several semen parameters.
Because sperm take approximately 2–3 months to develop, I typically recommend beginning acupuncture about three months before trying to conceive or before providing a sperm sample for an IUI or IVF cycle when possible though any time in the process is welcome.
Treatment may also include a review of semen analysis results along with individualized recommendations around nutrition, lifestyle, and supplements. At Raku Acupuncture, both partners are welcome to receive fertility support whether you are trying to conceive naturally or preparing for IUI or IVF.
-
Ideally, acupuncture can begin 2–3 months before starting an IVF cycle, giving us time to support your overall health, menstrual cycle, stress levels, and any symptoms or concerns leading into treatment. However, there is no “too late” point to begin. Many patients first come to acupuncture after they have already started medications, during ovarian stimulation, or while preparing for an embryo transfer.
Once your IVF cycle begins, acupuncture can be timed around important stages of treatment, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer. Your treatment plan will be individualized based on your fertility history, IVF protocol, and recommendations from your fertility clinic.
If you’re preparing for IVF in Doylestown or the greater Bucks County area and aren't sure when to begin acupuncture, you’re welcome to reach out or schedule an initial fertility acupuncture appointment. We can look at your upcoming IVF timeline together and determine what makes the most sense for you.
-
Ideally, acupuncture can begin 2–3 months before an IUI cycle, giving us time to support your menstrual cycle and overall health before treatment begins. However, you do not need to delay an upcoming IUI in order to start acupuncture. Many patients begin during the same cycle as their IUI.
Once your IUI cycle begins, acupuncture can be timed around your treatment plan, including during the follicular phase and around the time of insemination. Your acupuncture schedule will be individualized based on your cycle, medications, fertility history, and your fertility clinic’s protocol.
-
Frequency depends on your individual needs and where you are in your fertility journey. Many patients begin with weekly or every-other-week treatments. When trying to conceive naturally, we recommend weekly or bi-weekly appointments.
During an IVF or IUI cycle, appointments may be timed more specifically around stimulation, insemination, egg retrieval, or embryo transfer.
-
Yes! Acupuncture can be scheduled around embryo transfer as part of your IVF support. We'll coordinate the timing of your appointments with your transfer schedule and fertility clinic instructions.
-
You can begin fertility acupuncture at any point in your journey. Some patients begin several months before trying to conceive or starting fertility treatment, while others come in after they have already been trying for some time. If you are preparing for IVF, beginning acupuncture around 2–3 months beforehand can be helpful when possible, but it is not too late to start if your treatment cycle is already underway.

Common Things I Work With
-
Unexplained Infertility
I dislike this word- I prefer unexplored infertility. By regulating cycles, influencing hormone levels, and improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, acupuncture creates better conditions for conception.
-
PMOS (formerly PCOS)
Acupuncture can help regulate ovulation, reduce insulin resistance, and support more consistent cycles, making it a valuable tool for those with PMOS trying to conceive or trying to manage their health.
-
Endometriosis & Adenomyosis
Acupuncture can reduce inflammation and pelvic pain while supporting circulation to the uterus, which may improve cycle regularity and fertility outcomes.
-
IVF/IUI
Acupuncture is often used alongside IVF and IUI to improve blood flow to the uterus, support implantation, improve live birth rates and success as well as reduce the stress that can come with treatment.
-
Pre/Post IVF Transfer
Research has shown that patients who receive acupuncture before and after an IVF transfer are more likely to become pregnant and were less anxious.
-
Low AMH
Low AMH can feel disheartening. I have worked with so many patients on improving follicular response, egg quality, and supporting fertility outcomes even with low AMH.
-
Poor Semen Quality
Whether this is related to count, motility, or morphology, I’ve worked with many individuals to support improvements in semen quality. Using acupuncture and a personalized approach, we focus on circulation, reducing inflammation, and supporting overall health to help optimize fertility potential.
-
Recurrent Miscarriage
I work with many individuals who have experienced recurrent miscarriage. This can be an incredibly heavy and isolating experience, and you don’t have to move through it alone. In our work together, we focus on supporting your body in building a more stable, nourished environment for pregnancy, while also holding space for the emotional side of this process.
-
Luteal Phase Defect
LPD is often characterized as inadequate length of the luteal phase. This is often associated with low egg quality or low progesterone. A shorter or less supported luteal phase can make the second half of the cycle feel uncertain. I work with patients to help strengthen this phase by improving overall cycle health and creating a more stable foundation for implantation.
I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation if you’d like to connect and make sure this feels like the right fit before getting started.
