When Can I Start Acupuncture After a Miscarriage?

After a miscarriage, people often receive a great deal of information about what happened medically and very little guidance about how to feel supported afterward.

You might be recovering from bleeding or a procedure. You might be waiting for your cycle to return. You may want to try to conceive again soon, or you may not be ready to think about that yet. There is room for all of those experiences.

You can reach out about acupuncture whenever you feel ready, but the timing of treatment should take your medical recovery into account. Acupuncturists can work in tandem with your medical providers.

What does an appointment focus on?

There is no standard “post-miscarriage protocol” I give everyone. At your first visit, I’ll ask what kind of medical care you experienced, how far along the loss was, and how you are feeling now.

We can talk about sleep, appetite, energy, menstrual changes, and the emotional weight of what you’ve been through. Some people want to talk about their loss. Others would rather rest quietly during treatment. You do not have to tell the story in a particular way to receive care.

Acupuncture may offer a place to slow down and receive support as you recover. It does not replace follow-up care, and I would never frame a miscarriage as something you could have prevented by doing more.

Do I need to wait three months before trying again?

Chinese Medicine recommends recovery and replenishment after a miscarriage. That timeline can look different for everyone.

If you want time before trying again, acupuncture can be part of that period of recovery. If you are ready sooner and your clinician says it is medically appropriate, we can shape care around that plan. You do not need to complete a set number of acupuncture treatments before you are “allowed” to try.

What if I have had more than one loss?

Please tell your OB-GYN or reproductive endocrinologist. Repeated losses deserve a medical conversation and, when appropriate, an evaluation. You should not have to wait silently while wondering whether there is something worth investigating.

Acupuncture can sit alongside that care. My role is to listen carefully, support your well-being, and coordinate the acupuncture plan with what you and your medical team are learning.

There is no correct pace for recovery

Some people want an appointment soon after their medical follow-up. Some return months later. Some want support before another pregnancy, and others simply want somewhere to land after a difficult experience.

Wherever you are, we can begin with what you need now.
