What to expect at an acupuncture appointment

If you’ve never had acupuncture before, it’s natural to wonder what the experience will be like. At Raku Acupuncture, my goal is to make each visit comfortable, informative, and restorative. Here’s a step-by-step look at what you can expect when you come in for an appointment.

Your First Visit

Your initial appointment is longer than a follow-up visit— 90 minutes. We’ll begin with a detailed conversation about your health history, current symptoms, and goals for treatment. I’ll ask questions not only about your main concern but also about things like sleep, digestion, energy levels, and menstrual or reproductive health (if relevant).

This whole-body picture helps me understand the underlying patterns in your health so we can create a treatment plan that addresses your concerns at the root.

The Treatment Process

After we talk, you’ll rest comfortably on a treatment table. I’ll place very fine, sterile needles at specific acupuncture points chosen for your needs. Most patients are surprised at how gentle acupuncture feels—some notice a mild heaviness, tingling, or warmth, while many feel very little at all.

Once the needles are in place, you’ll have time to relax quietly. Many people describe feeling deeply calm, sometimes even drifting into sleep during this part of the session. I’ll check in with you to make sure you’re comfortable the entire time.

After Your Treatment

When the session is finished, you may feel relaxed, refreshed, or more energized. Some people notice immediate shifts in their symptoms, while others experience gradual changes over a series of treatments. I’ll share my recommendations for follow-up visits and any lifestyle tips that may support your progress.

Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-up visits are shorter—usually 60 minutes. We’ll check in about any changes you’ve noticed since your last treatment, then continue with acupuncture and adjust the plan as needed. Over time, treatments build on each other, creating lasting improvements in your health.

The Bottom Line

Acupuncture is a gentle, individualized therapy. Whether you’re coming for fertility, pregnancy support, stress, pain, or another concern, each session is designed to meet you where you are. From your very first appointment, you’ll be guided through the process so you feel informed, comfortable, and supported.

Acupuncture offers a holistic and natural solution to supporting your fertility & reproductive health as well as pregnancy & postpartum support.
